The Elan II manual has a graph in the back that tells what
aperture/shutter speed combo is selected in P mode for a given EV
based on film speed and using the 50/1.4 lens. Basically it shoots
wide open until 1/60 when both the f/stop and the shutter speed are
adjusted about equally until reaching 1/8000 (odd since the max
shutter speed is 1/4000!), after which the aperture continues to stop
down.

It seems to be the same on the Elan II (I rarely use it)...I don't
have to hold the shutter halfway though...just touch it to activate
the meter, then spin the dial to change the combo.
