You can. The tripod mount (Canon product # C547041) is optional.
Whether you want/need it or not depends on your complete setup.

One of the benefits of a 100mm macro over a 50mm macro is the
increased subject-to-camera distance the 100mm affords. Sometimes you'll be
very close, other times not so close. Likewise sometimes you'll be able to
control side-light and other times not.
