Actually, doing something like this probably INCREASES the chance of having your gear stolen, as it screams to everyone who sees it "THIS IS VALUABLE." It's kind of like the idiots who plaster decals all over their cars identifying their really expensive audio equipment, and then wonder why it gets stolen. I've left camera gear locked in my regular suitcase, sitting in a closet, in hotels all over the U.S., and in Mexico City and Rome, and never had a problem.
