I have both the 100mm f2.8 USM macro lens and the MR-14EX ringflash and have
found the combination to be top class. The lens is very impressive both in
sharpness and contrast. I have been using it mostly for botanical
photography and mainly in manual focus mode for close macro work but the AF
is also fast and silent. I have been using the ringflash with the camera in
mainly manual mode ( EOS3) with a shutter speed of 1/125 as I have found
that using it with camera AV mode results in very slow shutter speeds and
needs a steady tripod. The ability to alter the ratio of the two halves of
the ring is very useful and adds significantly more shadow than is usual
with such flashes. I haven't yet tried the master - slave setup with my
550EX but am looking forward to doing so soon.
I would certainly recommend this combination for serious macro work.
