It doesn't. Not in any useful way, anyhow. Camera tries to focus but
generally doesn't succeed. I have used that very combo and I find it
usable with manual focus only.

Then again autofocus isn't all that useful in macro shots anyway,
and that setup is quite useful as a travel macro option -- the tube
is much lighter than any macro lens as an addition to the 28-135.

The AF funcitons work fine my Elan IIe and EOS 3 and even my son's Rebel G.
I have even used both the Canon made EF 12mm and 25mm tubes together
outdoors 
and have had no problem.  Personally I do find AF useful for macro when 
handholding a lens.  But to each their own....
One point, for you to simply say it doesn't would mean that either 
my 3 cameras are exceptions to the rule or yours may need an adjustment.
I think the latter is more correct.
