This past weekend I had the oppurtunity to play around with various combinations of 1.4x, 2x and and EF-12 extension tube (all canon) on my 300 f/4. I was using print film so the -0.5 exposure compensation recommended by canon when using the 2x on the 300 f/4 probably didn't really matter. Curious though, when using the 2x (-0.5 compensation) and the EF-12 (+0.5 compensation) at the same time, is the net effect 0 (zero) exposure compensation???
Anyway, my question relates to the use of the 1.4x and 2.0x at the same time, which of course requires and extension resulting in loss of infinity focus. I have vaguely recall that some non-canon teleconverters can be stacked and do not require an extension tube, thereby maintaining infinity focus. Is this correct? Which TC's? If I were to use a third party TC with one of my canon TC's and 300 f/4, would I be better off using the canon 1.4x and a third party 2x or using the canon 2x and a third party 1.4x? I know, I know, I am really losing image quality by stacking TC's, but I just can not afford to buy a 600 f/4 right now.
What about stacking order?
lens|1.4x|EF-12|2x|camera
or
lens|2x|EF-12|1.4x|camera
does it really matter?
And finally, again just curious, will either of the above combos focus further than a combo that uses an EF-25 in place of the EF-12?
