I understand the feeling - I've had mine for almost 3 months now and really
enjoy this camera.
> I wonder if there'sany way to diffuse the on-camera flash.
Not aware of any commercial attachment. Remember its a pop-up flash.
> -- Are there generic (cheaper, better) batteries available for this
camera?
No. But the battery life is great. Buying a spare is not that expensive.
> -- Is there such a thing as a battery pack that can be filled with AAs or
other common batteries (like the units made for cell phones)?
No.
> -- If I buy the dual battery grip, will both batteries be used at once,
and will using them both double the life of the charge?
I do not have the battery grip but I have heard that it is not a
simultaneous battery drain.
> -- Is there an effective way to use my 540EZ until I can afford to sell it
(along with my like-new EOS 3) and buy a 550EX?
Yes - you just will not have E-TTL capability.
> -- Any suggestions on "wide" angle lenses for this body (I guess that
means17mm or less)?
Two things to consider - unless you get a 14mm the 1.6 magnification (or
crop) prohibits real wide angle capabilities. I have the 17-35 f/2.8 zoom
which gives you a 28 mm equivalent. For wide angles I use the 17-35 with my
EOS 5 - not my D30. There is no way I can accept 28 mm as my widest angle
so you may want to re-consider selling your EOS-3.
