My own EOS3 suffered from the power consumption problem with the EF300/2.8L IS.
I don't know anything about the SW vs FW issue. The camera was returned from Canon
Canada
with the following notation scrawled on the packing slip, " Release count 1032,
Upgraded from 6D to 6E firmware. CF19 added. Adjusted exposure. May 30/2000."
