Second curtain MUST be set on the EX Speedlight > or it will not function. This is likely true for all EOS cameras. It was certainly true for older bodies in combination with the EZ line of flashes. The 1N doesn't have a way to switch to 2nd curtain sync while in the manuals of my 100 and 5 it is made quite clear that the CF is meant for the INTERNAL flash only (which the 1N doesn't have).
