My wife needed a small travel camera and the smallest I had was
Canon T70 with FD35/2 lens. I was checking if it works and was
pointing at a lamp it in a dark room. I saw quite noticeable
flare and removed the filter (very old Aroma skylight) and almost
all of the flare was gone.
Damn, I have been using that great lens almost 20 years with that
sh** in front of it.

Then I checked my EOS lenses. I cleaned the filters (UV) and
made a similar check: I removed the filter but hold it in
front of the lens. By slightly turning the filter in slightly
different angles I tried to see if some of the flare "moves"
when I move the filter.

I saw that happen only on two of my EOS lenses: One had a 2 year
old Tokina MC filter and the other one had an old and slightly
scratched Canon filter. In the rest of my EOS lenses I had
less then 2 years old B&W and Hoya multicoated filters (I don't
exactly remember which Hoya versions but I think the two best
models, maybe they are called HMC and Super HMC) and by looking
through the viewfinder I didn't notice any problems.

So from now on I know which filters to use. Those bad ones
I will replace asap.
Maybe also for you it is worth to make such a test especially
if you photograph a lot in conditions with bright lights.

I know some don't use filters at all but since the best ones
don't seem to cause problems I will continue using them
(the filters were dirty enough to discourage removing them).

I also noticed it was difficult to clean some of the filters
(maybe the new MC filters are more diffucult than the old ones).
I had to press the micro fiber cloth more than I wanted to
remove some of the dirt and I didn't completely succeed even
then. I did brush and blow the filter first to get rid of the
loose dirt.
Any advice or similar experience?

Vesa
