My favorite 3rd party lenses are really the top/premium label of the 3
manufacturers.
They are:

        Tamron SP lenses
        Sigma EX lenses
        Tokina ATX lenses

In particular I like the Tamron SP 20-40mm F2.7 -3.5 (sharper than others
including Canon).
Tamron has an excellent SP 90mm F2.8 macro, and a 28-105mm F2.8 that is
sharp but slow AF.
Sigma 105mm EX Macro, wonderfully sharp and contrasty. Also their 70-200 APO
HSM EX is excellent.
For wide zooms, the Sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4 EX HSM is a great bargain.
Tokina has some good ATX lenses, but IMHO I find the new Sigma EX line very
hard to beat.
Only Tamron does not require their lenses to be upgraded when new EOS bodies
come out.
Apparently they have a good implementation of the EOS software (maybe they
bought the license?)
For TeleConverters, the new Tamron SP 1.4x and 2x are the best of the 3rd
party mfrs.
