What you say about the grit is true without any doubt. But I find it pretty
easy to avoid having such grit on your cloth or lens pen. Maybe I'm just
lucky, though. I also replace my lens pens regularly when I think they're
getting too "old".

As long as you take reasonable care to avoid grit on the cleaning surface
of the pen and lens, I don't see a real downside.
