I'd almost take the "meter without the filter" and file it under myth,
too.  My wife shoots a lot of IR, and, being far more interested in
results than technique, just fires, and brackets, away, trusting her
Elan II to do the right thing by her.  She's usually right, check out
the results at:

All of these were on AF and AE, with filter mounted.  No adjustment was
made for focus shift.  As an aside, my 1n manual mentions that EF lenses
without IR comp scales will focus properly in IR.
Tungsten incandescent light does indeed give interesting results, as you
can see in the studio images.
