The first camera I had with an internal meter was the Canon AT-1.
Whenever I compared its reading metered through a filter, whether red,
polarizing or otherwise, with a handheld meter, it was always within 1/3
stop. The latitude of the XP-2 I normally use lets me get away with a
lot of "metering laziness" I suspect.
