>From all the wonderful things I've heard about the 100-400, and
my personal test of the 170-500, which I found lacking and returned,
I think you'll be very happy with the change. Even without the IS
it will be a big improvement. I haven't tried it myself, but I'd bet
that the 100-400+2x is as sharp as the 170-500 at the 500 end.
