The 1V actually *does* use an IR film counter, "but a new optical system
for the sensor prevents fogging of the picture area":

Unfortunately, according to the Magazine, they didn't incorporate
this into the new EOS 30 as well:

(then again, they didn't incorporate the 45-point area autofocussing,
10 frames per second shooting, magnesium-shell, water-resistance
and dust-proofing, shooting-data retaining, film-id'ing, 100% viewfinder,
