Think also about the Sigme 50-500 ex.  This offers a different 10x mag range
and from all the tests a similar performance (admittedly no wide end, but the
money saved could buy a 17-35 ex as well for real coverage).  There have been
good reports in the U.K. photo press.  These two lenses are exactly my dilema
atthe monent.  In favour of the 35-350 is the assured quality and the 72mm
filter size with limited wide angle, but £1600 new - wow!!!  The Sigma goes
all the way up to 500mmm which I realy would use a lot, but am 86mm filter
thread means a limited and expensive filter selection, and also a gap between
35mm and 50mm (no grat loss for me though).  But I can get both the 50-500 and
the 17-35 for the same price as the 35-350 Canon (both new and secondhand).

This is indeed a difficult one!!!
