You may have been better off with a Vivitar 283 or 285 "Pro" flash 
(about$85)for what you are trying to do as I think you would only be 
able to use the 550EX on manual anyway with the hotshoe device. I 
have tried to use the 420EX as a second flash along with the 550EX as 
a main flash at a wedding and it only worked once or twice out of 20-
30 tries. There were people blocking the line of sight which rendered 
it useless. For supplemental lighting at a wedding a Lumedyne is 
still more reliable with a good radio slave.
