In New York, the NYC Police Department issues press credentials either for
a year, or for a single event. There's an application process and they
require photos, a security check, verification from the employer, etc. Most
surrounding communities accept NYPD credentials. If you're shooting inside
a venue, like a stadium, the venue may issue credentials on an
event-by-event basis. Contact the venue's press office.

Do NOT waste your time or money on those "we get you press passes" baloney
ads, because all you can do with their documents is place them between two
slices of bread with mayonaisse.
