Hi Gary,

Absolutely. The 430EZ has enough power for outdoor
fill and it has flash exposure compensation so you can
adjust the level of fill to one you like (-2/3 or -1
is IMO a good starting point for sunny days, more
compensation if it's overcast). The best bit is that
the camera basically takes care of it for you.

Your only limitation (outdoors) will be flash sync
speed. The Elan syncs at 1/125, so you may be using
smaller apertures to get that shutter speed in bright
sunlight.

Depending on what you're photographing that may or may
not be a problem. If you want larger apertures, that
can be solved with ND filters - and the flash will
automatically compensate (albeit with a reduced flash
range). The sync limitation though is body related, so
any flash will have that issue.

Regards
Gary
