Hi, Nick.

The ST-E2 is definitely a good alternative. I just got back my first set of
photos using the ST with one and or two 550EXs and the results are awesome! I
have a IIe and prefer to shoot manually, no ETTL since I can't take advantage
of the flash ratio function like the 7e, 3, and 1V can.

My shots were all indoors with the flash sometimes being up to six-feet behind
the ST. I found I can even put the flash behind a translucent reflector and am
still able to fire from a good distance away.

A couple of things to consider . . . Do you shoot indoors or outdoors more? If
you shoot indoors, I see no reason not to get the ST. If you shoot outdoors,
you'll probably have to be a bit more careful on the placement of the slaves.
Remeber, that's 40-degrees to each side for a total of 80 in front of the ST.

Remember too that the EX series have swivel, so you can better point the IR
receiver of the slave towards the ST.

I have a feeling that in *bright* sunlight you may have some trouble firing the
flash behind the transmitter. I can confirm that later if the weather
cooperates.

Yes, the ST is fixed position (hopefully Canon is listening, it would be nice
if it did swivel).

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me off-line if you have further questions.
