I use an L-508 too. It reads in 1/10ths of a stop. I suppose some medium
format cameras can be controlled at that level?
I use it mostly in tough lighting situations (i.e. real contrasty) or when I
want to guarantee I get either highlight or shadow detail. It allows me to
check the exposure range of a particular shot to see if it fits within the
films latitude.
It's particularly nice when the light is pretty consistent, you can take an
incident reading, set the camera and go!
I also use it to setup my 550EXs manually. That way I don't have to move the
storbes around so much. It can be used with or without a sync cord.
The L-608 has some great improvements over the 508. But it is also about $150
- $200 more! Mamiya, the distributor for the Sekonics, has a web board where
you can post questions and have them answered by users and techs. They were
definitely keeping notes becuase a lot of the suggestions for the 508 went into
the 608.
Anyhow, very happy with the 508.
