Craig,
Excellent point about learning to compensate on your own. I used to do this
without thinking on my old Minolta x-570. It only metered in center-weighted
mode, so you'd find something that approached the exposure you needed, point,
AE-Lock, recompose, shoot. It happened second-nature.
I've actually gone back to using this mode on my Elan IIe. I find I get more
predictable results. I suppose the partial metering mode would do just as
well. As long as you're very careful about what is covering the focus point
when you lock exposure.
But for those really tough situations and "studio" flash, the handheld is the
only way to go.
