So turn it off. I don't use ECF on the 3, and don't even notice its there.

The 7/30 has this, and it is absolutely useless for me, since I need correction
all the time. With my glasses I can't see anything, and the diopter adjustment
isn't strong enough for me to see anything through the viewfinder without my
glasses either. But since I am not forced to use it, I can just ignore it.

A very useful feature IMO; its just a matter of using it a bit to get the hang of
it.

Most of the things you want or don't want appear to be part of the physical
construction (ECF, adjustable diopter) which can't be added by reprogramming the
firmware. I'm not bothered by having a few "useless" features on my camera--better
to have a few things I don't use than lack something I would; and I don't really
understand all the griping about the 3 having "too much stuff" since no one is
*forced* to use any of it. If Canon or any other manufacturer made bodies with
lots of different configurations of features, we'd have the 1v, 1vv, 1vxl, 3, 3b,
3dfx, 30, 33, 330, 333, 3000, 3003, 3333, 33333, X-15--and they'd all cost more
than the actual models do now.
You know, on the FD list there's a lot of trashing of EOS gear by folks who have
never used it, due to its supposed fragility, poor build quality, electronics, and
"too many features," and it is pretty unattractive--I hope we can avoid that kind
of thing on this list. :-)
Cheers,
