~NK> What us camera geeks would really love, of course, would
~be a nice
~NK> direct interface to the camera's firmware. You'd plug in a wire,
~NK> alter the firmware (preferably through a nice simple
~flowchart GUI,
~NK> of course) and then flash the EEPROM. Naturally there'd be a Palm
~NK> interface so you could do this in the field as well.
~
~NK> This would be totally cool, but I really don't think the
~geek market
~NK> is even remotely big enough to support something like this. I
~NK> understand at least some parts of the firmware are flashable in at
~NK> least some EOS models via the hotshoe, but via proprietary Canon
~NK> testing gear only. For some reason, though, there doesn't
~seem to be
~NK> much hacker interest in figuring this all out.

Maybe flashing the EEPROM is a bit too far, but being able to download the
data about your previous shots (e.g. the EOS 1v) sounds like a really useful
thing.

I have another idea- there could be 3 or 4 buttons on the camera which could
be programmed by the user, something like CF4 on the 50 and 5. But it would
be more versatile. You could program the buttons for
** DOF preview
** IS activation
** AF activation
** Quick return to a preset focussing point
** MLU
** Toggle between quiet and high-speed film mode (great for wildlife
photographers)
** Toggle between the modes of your favourite custom function.
** Spotmeter (like you presently have a partial metering button).

You could select what you wanted each button to do from this list (feel free
to add to it) and you could program any button to any of these functions,
the ones most important to you as a photographer.
