Hi,

The 500 is a single-element lens of focal length 500mm,
corresponding to +2 diopter optical power.

The 500D is a double-element 500mm lens, which is better
corrected for chromatic abberation.

The D stands for "double", referring to the number of
elements, or the price :-)
