The B+W filters are considered to be the best. They have a brass ring that
will not be so sensitive to changes in temperature that can make the filter
thread expand and stick... I had a Hoya HMC Cir Pol Filter that I had to
remove from one of my lenses with a pair of multiple pliers. Not a very
pretty sight I can tell you... :-)

These are supposed to give you "some" loss in sharpness and are also more
inclined to give you flare problems. However - I have the P system and have
used them from time to time with no obvious problems. I make sure however
never to let the sun shine directly at the filter. I mainly use them
together with my EF 135/2.0L and that is considered to be a very sharp lens
so maybe that is why I can't really tell if they degrade the image sharpness
or not. I mostly use them for studio and b/w shots. And yes, they are
cheaper if you want to have a large variety of special effects filters that
fit lots of different filter threads.
Of course the best way to use you expensive glass is not to have a filter at
all - if possible and instead use the hood to protect your lens.
