The "undocumented feature" is a Sharpie, which I keep in my camera bag.  Before I 
rewind the film, I make a mental note of the number displayed on the LCD.  As soon as 
I remove the rewound film from the camera, I write this number on the leader with the 
Sharpie.  When it's time to reload the film, I make a
mental note of the number on the leader, and advance to that number with the lens cap 
on.  As long as I follow that routine, it hasn't failed me yet!

An EOS IX would do this for you, but then you'd have to put up with the small 
negative.  There are so few different APS films, that there isn't much point in 
switching anyway.  APS slide film is like UFOs:  Everybody is talking about it, but 
I'll be damned if I've ever seen any!
