I bought an EOS 3 and then later a a 1V instead of a second EOS3. ECF is a
controversial subject among the Canon SLR community. Some people swear by it
and claim they use it all the time. Others use it only occasionally. Others
don't use it at all. I am in the latter group. Though I found the Elan 7e's
ECF to be quite predictable and accurate, I have NEVER gotten the EOS 3's
ECF to work reliably, not matter how often I calibrated it, how careful I
was to center my eye so that all the focusing points were bright red, how
much I tried to keep my eye in the same position when shooting as when I
calibrated, etc. etc. etc. I don't know, maybe it's something funny about
how my eyes are shaped. But in any event, eventually I just gave up on it.
EOS 3 ECF may be for some people, but it's not for me.

I was totally happy to trade an eyepiece shutter and a diotper adjustment
(features of the 1V) for the ECF of the 3. The 1V features do me lots of
good every day. The EOS 3 ECF did me no good ever.

As I said, this is a controversial subject, with many vehement adherents to
the 3's ECF. I will never be one of those.
