    When shooting a portrait with a white background, the further you are
away from the subject, the more in-accurate your exposure will be (up to a
point). This is caused by the white background 'fooling' the cameras' meter
into under exposing. The closer you are to the subject, the more their face
will fill the frame, and the more skin tone will be taken into account by
the meter. Personally, I try to spot meter from a face or my hand, then set
the camera to manual before stepping back.
