Let me guess, you were shooting color negative film,
and looking at the prints, right? And is the
background substantially darker than the people in the
photo?
If those things are true, I'd bet on printing
problems, not camera or flash problems. When the
print machine analyzes the negative, it does it's
best to calculate an *average* exposure for the entire
print. With a large, dark background, faces are going
end up too light in the print.
A *good* printer will monitor the images as the film
goes through the machine and make adjustments. Most
operators don't know enough, or don't have enough
time, to do so.
