Before I finally saved enough to buy the 70-200 2.8L, I thought about the
old Canon 70-210 f/4. A couple of years ago, I borrowed one for a few
minutes at the KEH store that used to be in Dallas and shot about a dozen
pictures. I was VERY disappointed. First, the lens is a push-pull zoom,
which has also kept me from buying the 100-400 (call me stupid). Second, it
was very bulky/long for its range (an opinion), and lastly it was very poor
(unsharp) wide open and not even average at smaller apertures, and I was
using a monopod. It's just not a very sharp lens at all, based on my sample
of one.
There's another lens, I think made by Sigma, that's a 100-300 f/4, that I've
always meant to look into for those times when the 2.8 is just too big and
heavy, but these days I'm more interested in saving for the Canon 17-35.
