Isn't there a CF which has something to do with these
"electrically manually focusable" lenses.

If I remember it correctly you can enable or disable the
electrical FTM in some situation but I'm not sure if this
selection is valid always or only in the case you are
discussing here.

The 300/2.8 IS has mechanical FTM so it works always.

If not this reason then could it be possible that different
bodies (old vs. new) behave differently?
