  Congratulations on noticing this before actually shooting something. 
I didn't realize this was a problem until I was doing a shoot 
(nothing important, luckily) and found the AF assist didn't work. At 
all. Duh.

  I wasn't able to figure out much to fix the problem. It seems to be 
just basic geometry - when the flash is higher up than it's supposed 
to be the AF light angle doesn't align. You could fiddle with it and 
get the thing a bit closer, but only for certain distance ranges. Or 
strap a flashlight onto your flash frame and try that.
