As I said (which started this sub-thread), the
photographers knowledge of his equipment, and how to
use it best, is key. But that doesn't mean equipment
never matters.
Putting a 1v, or a Leica, into the hands of my wife
isn't going to result in her producing better pictures
than with the Elan II she uses now, **except that they
will probably be better exposed in tricky lighting
situations**. So yes, sometimes equipment matters.
My EOS 3 doesn't make any better photos of landscapes
than did my Canon FTb many years ago. But it does get
me better pictures of soccer games, because 5 fps
helps me catch the action better, and AI focus gives
me more in-focus shots of moving action. (Actually,
AI focus does even more. Shooting sports with manual
focus, I tended to shoot from the sidelines, where the
action moved parallel to me and I could pre-focus.
Shooting with AI focus lets me shoot from more angles,
so I can more effectively shoot action coming towards
me. So yes, in this case equipment improves my
photography.
And if I swap my EOS 3 for a plastic lensed Brownie
box camera, the sharpness, contrast and clarity of my
photographs is sure to suffer.
But choosing an EOS 3 over a box camera won't improve
my vision. If I point the camera at lousy subjects,
or from bad angles, or shoot in poor light, I'll still
get bad photos. If I don't understand depth of field,
perspective, and the limits of AF and AE, I'll still
get dull pictures that no one cares about.
