Hi Henry,

Another "more ideal" solution might be to use a system with the
focus beam emitter sitting on the hotshoe.  Even my old Achiever
flash had a handle-mount option (which I bought for ten dollars).

So, in the Canon system, will an ST-E2 atop the hotshoe reliably
trigger a bracket mounted 550EX or 420EX flash?

Could conceivably clear confusing coiled-cord clutter :-)
