The problem is that the lens diameter interferes with the external AF
assist light, and, to a certain extent, the built in flash. The focus
assist light is the red light you see blinking on the zoom ring. All of
the EOS cameras with AF assist lights and built in flashes have this
problem. My A2 (EOS 5) and my wife's Elan II (EOS 50) both do, and I
think her 10s does also.
