Am planning on buying an Elan 7, mostly for macro work. Have already decided on the new Canon USM 100mm, but not sure about a choice for a 50mm. The manual focus on the Canon 50 mm felt a little sloppy to me. Of course that's compared to the FD lenses that I'm accustomed to <G>. The Sigma 50 mm EX has been getting favorable comments but I haven't handled it.
