As I had mentioned that I would post, this is the response that Canon tech support gave me about the sensation of play or shimmy in the 28-105 lens: <<<All of Canons EF lenses do have some give to the lens which is normal. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine if the "give" you are describing is normal or not unless we have examined the lens. If you wish to have your lens tested up to Factory specifications, then we suggest that you forward it, properly packaged and insured with a letter describing the difficulties (including your name, address and telephone number), and proof of warranty, to the following Canon Factory Service Center: Canon Factory Service Center 100 Jamesburg Road Jamesburg, NJ. 08831 Telephone Number: (732) 521-7007 Your equipment will be examined and you will be advised of the findings. Thank you for your inquiry, Canon USA>>>> Of course, I still don't really know the answer to my question and am considering taking them up on their offer. Has anyone sent them a lens for testing? How long does it generally take them to do?
