Hi,
I bought the 1.4x TC because it will give sharper pictures than the 2x TC,
and 560mm is OK for me, not that I wouldn't like 800mm.
Also f/8 (with the 1.4x TC) is not too bad; in fact, it's quite OK with 400
film, but f/11 (with the 2x TC) is getting slow, and probably much harder
to focus.
With the Canon 1.4x TC, I lose Autofocus, but keep metering and IS also.
I don't think the Elan 7 would suffer from the 100-300 lens plus TC
combination. You will probably use a tripod a lot though.
I always use a lens hood. I'm lazy, so I use the same.
