That's what I thought at first, and that's how I compose my group shots,
focus on the person in front because I get more DOF at the back of the
subject, but the DOF is a few feet between the subject and the camera and
ends immediately at the subject, even one feet behind the subject is out of
focus. All my shots from 13-14 rolls of 36 exposures came out this way,
even with both lens.

Then it's time to run a test like what you described, my friend also has a
EOS30 which I can borrow, so I can verify the results by testing with
another body.
