Dear list members,
I'm going to buy a used EF100-400L IS tomorrow but I don't have its manual
to review beforehand. Could the experts here who are using this lens give
me some hints on what to look at and what quick tests should be carried out
to ensure it's functioning properly?

Billy,
Check the friction ring on the mount and make sure it works as it should.
It shjould tighten and loosen the drag on the zooming of the lens.
Next, check the manual focus ring and make sure it works as well as AF.
There are switches on the rear of the lens.
You have Image Stabilization on/off and settings 1/2. You should really not
see a difference between 1 and 2 holding it but #2 is for panning a subject.
If you are able to check out and make sure these work. Outside of that you
should be OK.
