I'm cross posting this from the EOS1v list since it effects other EOS
bodies too (hopefully not my 1n!):

Hello,

last week a major glitch was found in several EOS models including
the professional EOS 3. The problem was found during a discussion in
the german newsgroup de.rec.fotografie (see threads "[Canon]
Antwort/Stellungnahme" and "Re: [F] Canon: Feature oder Bug? Ich
komm' nicht klar."). Canon was contacted here in germany but the
answer was not very satisfying.

The problem:

Every time an external E-TTL capable flash is turned on (e. g. 550EX)
and the flash ready signal is send to the camera the "Metering Mode"
for the available light switches to "Centerweighted averaging
metering". The display did not shows the new setting, but the camera
did not use the current setting (e. g. evaluative, partial or spot
metering) for the available light metering.

This can be checked very easy. Set the camera to spot metering.
Choose a motiv with a small black object in the middle and some more
brighter objects around. Now check the exposure level scale on the
right side and switch on the flash. Right at the moment when the
flash shows the green light the exposure level scale changes! This
should not happend if the spot metering mode is active when the flash
is on. This behavior is the same when evaluative, partial or spot
metering is active. Only when centerweighted averaging metering is
active, the exposure level scale did not change when the flash is
turned on.

This is not mentioned in the german user manual for the EOS 3 nor it
is mentioned in any available information from canon.

This behavior is not intuitive nor is it a logical or technical
limitation. IMHO this is just a pure bug! It can not be that the
camera is set to spot metering and every time I use the flash it
switches to centerweighted averaging metering without any feedback in
the display and without any information about this faulty behavior in
the user manual!

Further tests with a EOS 50E/Elan IIe shows that this camera only
switches to centerweighted averaging mode when the camera is set to
evaluative mode. When the EOS 50E/Elan IIe uses the partial metering
and the flash is turned on, is uses partial metering further on.

I did not know if this bug only appears on the EOS 3 and EOS 50e/Elan
IIe (and other E-TTL-capable EOS cameras) or if this bug appears on
older models with A-TTL only...

Regards,
Manuel Fischer
