I'm thinking of getting a second EOS body for shooting IR.
I know this comes up a lot, but it seems difficult to get any actual
data on which models fog the sprocket area on Kodak HIE infrared film
and which do not. People have quoted EOS Magazine's article on the
subject, but as Willem-Jan Markerink has pointed out, there are some
inaccuracies in what they've said.
So. I'd like to compile a list of which EOS cameras are IR safe
based on people's *actual personal experience*. Please email me if
you've shot Kodak HIE IR film in your EOS camera. Did the camera a)
work fine, b) fog the sprocket area only or c) fog the sprocket area
and part of the visible image area?
I also have three questions which aren't answered in any of the EOS
IR FAQs I've seen.
1) EOS Rebel (North America) / EOS 1000 QD (Japan) / EOS 1000
(everywhere else)
Supposedly this camera handles IR film fine, since it uses a
sprocket drive. However, both the date back and non date back
versions of this camera apparently have holes in the pressure plate
for the date printing, since they use the same pressure plate.
Question: has anyone actually tried taping exposed film or something
to the pressure plate to avoid this problem?
2) EOS Rebel S II (North America) / EOS 1000 S QD (Japan) / EOS 1000
FN (everywhere else)
This camera is an upgrade to the original Rebel/1000. However, some
literature I've read seems to suggest it's quieter than the
Rebel/1000 owing to the new "whisper drive" mechanism. Which would
imply that it uses an IR sensor in lieu of sprockets.
Question: has anyone actually tried IR film in this camera? Is it
definitely a sprocket mechanism?
3) EOS 10S (North America)/ EOS 10 QD (Japan) / EOS 10 (everywhere else)
Finally, I've read that the 10/10S is IR safe, since it uses a
sprocket mechanism. However, there was a date back version of this
camera sold in Japan.
Question: can anyone tell me if the non-dateback versions of this
camera (ie: the 10 and 10S) have pressure plate holes?
Thanks!
