Hi Alan,

Welcome to the EOS Mailing List. I'm a new

The IS on the newest Image Stabilizer lenses work with the lens
mounted on a tripod:
  EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM
  EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM
  EF 500mm f/4 L IS USM
  EF 600mm f/4 L IS USM
and presumably the new EF 400mm f/5.6 DO IS USM.

The IS on the older lenses can sometimes help, but can often
get confused, when the lens is on a tripod.
  EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
  EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM
  EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
  EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
I own two of these lenses. Switching off the IS can also preserve
precious battery power.
