Don't mess with flash exposure compensation to shorten recycle time - it
will also affect you images!

As previously mentioned, there are some after-market external packs
available, all 6-volt low-power supplies (high-voltage supplies are
available for the 420EX).  The least expensive option is to use
rechargeable NiCd or NiMH cells - I reduced my 550EX recyle-time from 20
seconds to 5 by using NiCd cells.
