I have used EOS EF to M42 mount converter on EOS 50E and EOS 30, basically
its just a metal ring. When you mount some M42 lens with it to the body the
camera shows aperture value 00 and you can't change it (it's the same
situation when you just remove lens from the camera, aperture 00 is shown
and you can't change it). Anyway, metering works OK if you adjust aperture
manually on the lens, because exposure is metered TTL (through the lens),
it's the actual light that passes to the sensors that matters, and this you
can adjust by turning aperture ring on the lens. Shot hundreds of pictures
with russian made Jupiter 21M lens (200mm f/4) that way and never had any
exposure problems. There is no magic about it at all.
The EF to M42 converter costs about $30 US, Jupiter 21M I bought for $45
brand new. I have used other M42 lenses on EOS as well (Mir-1, Mir-10,
Helios-40, Jupiter-9), they cost you almost nothing but you can achieve very
good results. It's not because I don't own any canon lens, I do, but using
M42 lenses on EOS is a lot of fun, because of their low price tag.
