The camera has to be set to remote-ready mode before it'll pay any
attention to its IR receiver. On my Elan/100 this is a button marked
with a timer and a little remote control symbol.
Then you simply put a battery into the RC-1, slide the power switch
out of the L (lock) position and click the release button, pointing
the remote at the front of the camera. The dot is immediate release;
the 2 position is a 2 second delay with optional mirror prefire.
On my Elan at any rate there's also a remote timeout feature. If you
don't use the remote within a certain number of seconds after
switching the camera to remote mode it'll go back to ignoring the IR
receiver. I forget how long that timeout period is, and there's film
in my camera so I don't feel like testing it. :) It's pretty short -
maybe a minute?
