I think to a large degree, it depends upon the specific lens. Like other
manufactures, Sigma has some dogs but they also have some very nice lenses
with, I think, build quality that equals both Canon and Nikon in some
instances. I don't have any Sigma lenses right now, but I do feel that most
of their EX series of lenses are quite good, both optically and in terms of
build quality. I would not for instance, hesitate a moment to buy their
70-200 f/2.8 EX HMS. Some years ago I understand, about the only good thing
you could say about a Sigma lens was that it didn't cost very much. I think
they have moved beyond that and are now producing some very decent glass.
Once you get a bad reputation, it's hard to shake however.
