Here's my even less unscientific reasoning (based mostly on hope...):

The diameter of this lens will be about the same as 300/2.8L IS so
that's (about 5500,- Euros, in Germany) what I use as reference.

I bet Canon will have some difficulties in handling the highlights
with the DO element, even in the final production version so that
will decrease the price.
Also, fluorite is supposed to be expensive to manufacture so lack of
it will also decrease the price compared to the 300/2.8L.
On the other hand, DO element won't be easy to make either even if
it will use separate diffraction grating molded on the glass (?).
Also the marketing value of lower weight and length can't be ignored
although that probably makes the lens mechanics cheaper to
manufacture, in fact.

So, it may start a bit more expensive but after one year the price
will be around 2/3 (or less) of the 300/2.8L, thus around 3500 Euro.
If they fix the halo-next-to-highlight -problem then it's another
story...
